In John 3, we read the story of Nicodemus, a Jewish ruler, who came to Jesus by night to learn who He was and what He was really all about. Nicodemus knew there was something real about this Jesus, but he wasn’t ready to “be seen with Him” and possibly blow his “career” and reputation on their little visit. Is there any part of Nicodemus that you can see in yourself? Are you cool with Jesus as long as He doesn’t cause you to miss out on something “fun” or lose too many friends? Or is your relationship with Jesus a 24/7 commitment? Here are few questions that might help you figure that out:*
1. Do you love Jesus more than anyone or anything else in your life?
2. Do you desire Jesus’ will for your life over your own?
3. Are you willing to accept ridicule and sacrifice for the cause of Christ?
4. Will you commit to following Jesus whether or not it’s popular or convenient?
Tough questions, for sure! But very telling!
Are there specific things you can think of that your relationship with Jesus requires you to give up? Or may one day require you to? If you’re serious about your relationship with Him, there should be. Take a minute to make a list, then ask Jesus to give you the courage to let go of these things and truly follow Him.
And remember, there is a cost to following Jesus, but there is a far greater cost to not following Him! You can be sure that Jesus will reward your choice to follow Him, if not in this life in eternity with Him.
